Apple Could Be Working on Smart Rings to Act as Controller for VR Headset
The patent, spotted by Patently Apple, shows the versatility of the product that has capabilities for Virtual Reality as well as for Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality. The patent by Apple describes the use of a technique called self-mixing interferometry (SMI) that will use one or more SMI sensors to detect hand gestures. An SMI sensor will be able to track users’ finger movements with respect to another finger and/or the palm. The SMI sensor will also be able to recognise devices like Apple Pencil and can work in accordance.
The data collected from such SMI sensors will be able to render real world objects into the virtual world for a better tactile effect. It will be able to judge objects like Apple Pencil and determine various measurements made by the user in the AR and VR space. The patent describes that one SMI sensor will be able to work on a single axis, essentially allowing scrolling for users with a single ring-shaped device. When multiple SMI sensors are paired, it will allow users to use the X, Y and Z planes enabling more gestures with the AR controller. The ring-shaped device may also be able to provide haptic feedback to users and to other components within itself.
Since this is only a patent, it doesn’t assure the launch of a similar product in the future. Apple Glass VR headset, on the other hand, is expected to release in 2022.
