DJI has announced the DJI Action 2. The new modular action camera is small yet powerful and promises impressive video specs in a rugged, compact body. Starting at $399, the camera has many different add-on modules and configurations, allowing users to fit the DJI Action 2 to their workflow and needs.

Starting with the image sensor, the DJI Action 2 has a 1/1.7″ sensor, which is the same size as the sensor in the DJI Pocket 2. For reference, the GoPro Hero 10 has a 1/2.3″ sensor. The DJI Action 2 is a successor to the DJI Osmo Action, and the Osmo Action also includes a 1/2.3″ sensor. The DJI Action 2’s F2.8 lens delivers a 155-degree field of view, up 10 degrees from the Osmo Action. DJI has equipped the Action 2 with a new color temperature sensor to help the camera deliver accurate colors in a wide range of situations, including underwater.

The camera’s ISO range is 100-6400 for both photo and video. The maximum photo resolution is 4000 x 3000 pixels, which is a 12MP image. The DJI Action 2 can shoot raw DNG files. The electronic shutter ranges from 30s to 1/8000s. There’s a 4x digital zoom for stills and video, although using 4x digital zoom for video requires a framerate equal to or less than 60fps, and HorizonSteady must be turned off. You can use a 2x digital zoom for faster video or when using HorizonSteady.

Video resolution tops out at 4K. When recording 4K video, 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios are available. In 4:3, which is 4096 x 3072, available framerates are 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps. In 16:9, which is 3840 x 2160, you can also shoot at 100 and 120 fps. 4x slow motion is available when recording at 120 fps, so it plays back at 30 fps. If you want even faster speeds, dropping the resolution to 1080p (16:9 only) allows 200 and 240 fps shooting, which opens up 8x slow-motion capabilities. Users can also record timelapse videos at 4K resolution. The camera also includes a Hyperlapse mode. Video is recorded to a microSD card in MP4 format (H.264/HEVC), and the maximum video bitrate is 130 Mbps.

The camera’s built-in battery offers runtime up to 70 minutes. This figure is for 1080/30p video without stabilization, so take it with a grain of salt. This can be extended to up to 160 minutes by using the front touchscreen module, and by connecting the power module, battery life of up to 3 hours is possible. Without any modules, the DJI Action 2 is 39 x 39 x 22.3mm and weighs only 56g. The action cam is waterproof without a case down to 10m. With the waterproof case, it can be safely used at depths of 60m. The camera has a single built-in mic. It also includes a 1.76″ touchscreen which has 350 ppi resolution.

Stability is important in an action cam. The DJI Action 2 includes electronic image stabilization at frame rates up to 60 fps. The RockSteady 2.0 stabilization promises strong performance. The new HorizonSteady mode further levels your video.

The DJI Action 2 includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It connects with the DJI Mimo app, which offers expanded functionality like a live video feed from the camera, story templates, and more. You can also edit your video in Mimo and export content for social media. You can live stream 1080/30p video from the DJI Action 2. It can also be used as a USB video device class for conference calls and broadcasting.

There are many modules available for the DJI Action 2. The Front Touchscreen Module adds a front-facing OLED and 4-mic Matrix Stereo array. This module extends battery life, adds a USB-C port and adds a memory card slot. The Action 2 Power Module adds another microSD card slot and extends battery life. The Magnetic Lanyard lets you attach the Action 2 to clothing. The Magnetic Ball-Joint Adapter Mount is an adhesive base to attach the Action 2o to just about any surface. The Magnetic Adapter Mount lets you use the Action 2 with most third-party (GoPro) action camera accessories. There’s also a Remote Control Extension Rod, DJI Floating Handle, Action 2 Waterproof Case, Action 2 Magnetic Headband, and Action 2 Macro Lens available.

If you want even better audio, DJI has also announced the DJI Mic. It is a dual-channel wireless recording system compatible with the Action 2 and other devices with a 3.5mm audio or USB-C input.

The DJI Action 2 is available now and starts at $399 for the standalone unit. It’s also available in two bundles: The DJI Action 2 Dual-Screen Combo (DJI Action 2 Camera Unit, Front Touchscreen Module, Magnetic Lanyard, Magnetic Ball-Joint Adapter Mount, and Magnetic Adapter Mount) for $519 and the DJI Action 2 Power Combo (DJI Action 2 Camera Unit, Power Module, Magnetic Lanyard, and Magnetic Adapter Mount). However, the Power Combo won’t be available until the end of November. For more information, visit DJI.
