Elon Musk Sells 4.4 Million Tesla Shares Worth Billion

Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk sold $4 billion (roughly Rs. 30,610 crore) worth of shares in the electric vehicle maker, US securities filings showed on Thursday, in sales likely aimed at helping finance his planned purchase of Twitter.

Musk said in a tweet that there are “no further TSLA sales planned after today.” He sold 4.4 million shares on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the filings, equating to 2.6 percent of his stake in the company.

The sale came after Musk on Monday clinched a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,36,690 crore) cash in a transaction that will shift control of the social media platform populated by millions of users and global leaders to the world’s richest person. Musk’s net worth is $268 billion (roughly Rs. 20,50,725 crore), according to Forbes.

As part of the deal, Musk said he would provide a $21 billion (roughly Rs. 1,60,690 crore) equity commitment.

It is not clear how he will cover the remaining $17 billion (roughly Rs. 1,30,090 crore) of equity financing. Musk holds a 43.61 percent stake in unlisted rocket company SpaceX that is reportedly valued at $100 billion (roughly Rs. 7,65,230 crore).

Musk has been looking for partners to reduce his equity contribution to the deal, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters, adding that it is far from certain such a partner will emerge.

This is his first Tesla stock sale since he offloaded $16.4 billion (roughly Rs. 1,25,500 crore) worth of shares in November and December after polling Twitter users about selling 10 percent of his stake in the electric car maker.

Musk said on Twitter that he would pay more than $11 billion (roughly Rs. 84,140 crore) in taxes in 2021 due to his exercise of stock options set to expire this year.

Some traders have fretted this week that Musk may not have enough money sitting around to fund his $21 billion (roughly Rs. 1,60,690 crore) cash contribution and could walk away from the deal, weighing on Twitter shares.

Tesla shares have fallen nearly 20 percent since Musk disclosed his over 9 percent stake in Twitter on April 4. Investors have expressed concern that Musk may have to sell Tesla shares to fund his equity contribution to the takeover offer.

As part of the Twitter deal, Musk also took out a $12.5 billion (roughly Rs. 95,600 crore) margin loan tied to his Tesla stock. He had already borrowed against around half of his Tesla shares.

Google Is Rolling Out Custom AI Art Screensavers on Google TV Devices

Google is rolling out the new features announced for Google TV devices last week. Among them, the standout feature is the addition of custom artificial intelligence (AI) art screensavers. This feature allows users to turn their idle screen into a unique piece of art. Additionally, users can also use their images on Google Photos to make it a screensaver. Separately, the Mountain View-based tech giant is also adding a new home panel that will act as the centralised smart home hub.

Google TV Gets AI Screensavers

A new support page for Google TV has gone up, which details the new feature. Screensavers appear when a smart TV has been left idle for quite a while, and it begins showing wallpapers instead of the home screen. These are usually stock images and generic in nature. However, the new AI feature offers a way for users to flaunt unique art in this space.

There are three ways a user can add a custom AI art screensaver. The first is to type a prompt describing the art users want to see. Another way is to use the set templates provided and select them to generate AI art. The third method involves using the “Inspire Me” option. This option will let the AI generate a random art for users to save as a screensaver.

If AI images are not something the user prefers, they can also add their favourite pictures from Google Photos. However, to use this feature, the user must be logged into their Google account. Notably, users cannot pick individual images and will have to pick one or more albums to showcase as their screensaver.

To set up an AI art screensaver on your Google TV device, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to Google TV home screen and select Settings.
  2. Go to System and select Ambient mode.
  3. From the list of screensavers, select Custom AI Art. Go to Create New…
  4. Choose between Describe your idea, Inspire me, and Suggested templates.
  5. After creating a piece of custom AI art, you can use the up and down button to scroll through its variations.
  6. Save the preferred images to the image library.
  7. You can add more prompts to generate more images. Once done, select Set all as screensaver.

Amazon Fire TVs to Carry Freely Streaming Platform in Boost for BBC, ITV

Amazon Fire TVs to Carry Freely Streaming Platform in Boost for BBC, ITV

Freely, a new streaming service backed by the BBC, ITV and other British public broadcasters, will be available on Amazon Fire televisions following a “landmark deal” with the US technology giant, the companies said on Monday.

The deal is a win for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, whose joint venture, called Everyone TV, launched Freely earlier this year, allowing viewers to stream both live TV and on-demand content for free when they purchase smart TVs carrying the service.

The tie-up will help take content from the four public broadcasters – which are required by UK law to offer programming beneficial to the public interest – to more British households, through smart TVs using Amazon’s popular Fire operating system.

“A deal of this kind, between a technology giant and those working in the public interest, is remarkable,” Everyone TV Chief Executive Jonathan Thompson said.

“It represents a significant development in widening the availability of Freely and therefore ensuring UK audiences can access free TV well into the future.”

Freely’s launch in April marked the first time all four of Britain’s public service broadcasters joined hands to set up a streaming service, as they look to future-proof live TV in the age of streaming.

Freely offers 70,000 hours of on-demand content, more than any other major streaming platform in Britain including Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV, according to data from London-based Ampere Analysis.

Everyone TV has also signed a deal with TV manufacturer TCL, which will include Freely in their new 2024 smart TVs, it said.
