Many folks will surely think of their parents, a friend or perhaps a colleague when they think of someone who has inspired them. It’s that special person who has changed the course of your life in some dramatic way.

A key inspiration for me came from a bit further down the family tree. When I was in my single-digit years, just about our entire family would gather at my grandmother’s house for Christmas. It was my favorite time of the year (partly, of course, because of the presents, but my grandmother’s cheesecake was to die for).

My aunt always brought this huge Betamovie camcorder to film everything from the late afternoon dinner to the last present being opened by my grandmother (she always had the last one as a tribute to her being the anchor of the family). While the Betamovie was a camcorder, not a camera, it sparked my initial interest in photographing (and filming when necessary) my life. That very same aunt later would buy me my first camera – a Polaroid Sun 600 LMS.

Ever since then, I’ve looked up to my aunt as the one who helped me remember my life through photography, which I would otherwise have long forgotten much of.
