Less talk, more photos: Sigma FP2 samples gallery

A snapshot of how the bijou Sigma behaves, when dealing with with a series of subjects and lighting conditions

For all that our reviews include studio testing and analyzing Raw files to interpret the exposure/gain strategy, a lot of the process involves simply using the camera. As well as providing Raw files for download, so that you can see how they’d work with your preferred processing workflow, the sample galleries are provided as evidence that we’ve used the camera in a variety of situations, rather than handling it at a press conference and then drawing a conclusion.

In this case, they also let you see the full HDR versions of the images, from a camera that’s always capturing high dynamic range images. The samples in this page should appear with extra bright regions (that can retain saturation) if you’re viewing using an HDR-aware browser and an HDR-compatible device. The previews in the gallery system will not appear as HDR but downloading the original JPEGs will let you see how those ones should look, too.

If your browser and device are HDR compatible, this image should glow brighter than the version in the gallery widget at the bottom of the page. If they look the same, you’re seeing the SDR version.

All of the images in this gallery were shot using either the Standard or Rich color modes (each image is annotated with the color mode used). Generally we’ve rather liked the Sigma FP2’s output, though we would like the ability to turn off (or, perhaps, tone down) the HDR processing for subjects without particularly bright highlights.

The HDR version of this is a little extreme for our tastes, with the bright tones on the face being pushed too bright. We prefer the SDR version, in this instance.

We’ve included examples of the camera’s animal detection mode as well as its eye detection, which we’ve found to be very effective. We’ve also made sure to include images shot under a variety of artificial lights, so show the degree to which it is (and isn’t) affected by banding.
