Premiere mobile is getting free pop music you’ll actually want in your video

Adobe had partnered with UMG and WMG to give you access to clips of songs from some of the most popular artists in your edits.

Adobe has announced a partnership with Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group – two of the three major record labels – to make it easy to use popular songs if you’re editing a video in Premiere mobile. The company says this will help people creating videos that follow a trend (think: dancing to a specific song) or who just want something more exciting than standard royalty-free music.

According to Adobe, you’ll be able to use an up-to-60-second clip of songs from “leading artists” in videos, though it’s currently unclear how much of the labels’ catalogs will be available. Premiere mobile will let you search for artists or songs, browse through genres and even keep a list of favorites. There will also be “customizable templates paired with music” that Adobe says will bring “the track and visual story together from the beginning.”

Adobe says the license is for “personal, non-commercial use”

One important caveat: Adobe says the license is for “personal, non-commercial use,” so while you may be able to use a Sabrina Carpenter or Taylor Swift song on your highlight reel from your latest vacation, this won’t be a hack to get an otherwise unaffordable soundtrack for a professionally-made video. (And our Instagram followers should consider themselves lucky, as I absolutely could not be trusted with such power.)

To me, this move feels like an obvious attempt from Adobe to compete with TikTok’s editing tools and Instagram’s Edits, which also allow the use of pop music in your videos. While these apps typically provide a smooth experience for using those songs if you’re posting your edit to their platforms, things could get complicated if you post them to multiple platforms. With Premiere, however, Adobe says you’ll be good to post your video to your “favorite licensed social platforms” like YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels.

According to Adobe, the music will be coming to Premiere mobile soon, which is available for iOS and Android, and is free to use even if you don’t have a Creative Cloud subscription.
